Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others: Managing Grief & Loss

This workshop will provide information about managing grief and loss as you care for yourself while also caring for others. We all experience loss in a variety of ways, from death, changes in relationships, illnesses, moves, etc. Grief is the natural reaction to these losses. In order to do our best in caring for others, we need to learn how to attend to our own grief, and companion others through theirs in a life enhancing way.

In this workshop, you will take an inventory of your loss history, learn about the grief journey and practice skills to help you cope. Who should attend? Anyone who works in a helping profession is invited to attend.

The workshop will be presented by Brenda Kim, MSW, LCSW, Social Worker in the Centre Region, and Jackie Hook, MA, Spiritual Director and Celebrant, Helping Grieving Hearts Heal, Koch Funeral Home.

The registration fee includes light morning refreshments and materials.

We encourage you to share this workshop information with your colleagues and with others who may be interested. All are welcome!  Please register by Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.

Has community service been a part of your life? - News

“Service to humanity is the best work of life. I’ve spent my life doing it and would rather work for the benefit of others than anything else. A good funeral director needs to have that kind of mindset.” Serving humanity is one reason F. Glenn Fleming, Koch Funeral Home Funeral Director and Supervisor, got involved in the funeral industry and why he has given so much of his time to community organizations and service groups.                        ~ F. Glenn Fleming

Community service has been a big part of Funeral Director and Funeral Services Manager, John “Jay” Herrington’s, life too.  For Jay, community service fits with his philosophy of being a giver. He appreciates that through his service the community opened to him and enabled him to interact with and meet a lot of people. In addition, Jay likes the camaraderie within service organizations, and with his free time he derives great satisfaction from giving back.                                           ~John "Jay" Herrington

On the day after Thanksgiving, StoryCorps invites everyone to participate in the National Day of Listening by taking a few minutes to record an interview with a loved one. You can use recording equipment that is readily available in most homes, such as computers, iPhones, and digital recorders, along with StoryCorps’ free Do-It-Yourself Instruction Guide.

Show your support by wearing blue today!  Children's Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to make sure that grieving children receive the support they need.

Children's Grief Awareness Day began in Pennsylvania from a desire on the part of students to do more to bring attention to what their grieving classmates were coping with, for the most part, in silence. This initiative grew out of an ongoing partnership of the Highmark Caring Place with hundreds of schools across the state.

BREAKING NEWS - Consumer Alert / Protect Consumers - Senate Bill 874

PFDA LogoA fact you should know when pre-planning a funeral:

The Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association (PFDA) has launched a media campaign to educate Pennsylvania consumers about “constructive delivery.”

“Constructive delivery” is the result of the Future Interment Act of 1952 that permitted cemeteries to use 30% of their sales for current expenses and place the remaining 70% into a trust for the future when the merchandise was needed.   In recent years large corporate owned cemeteries invented "constructive delivery" so they could actually use that 70% prior to the time of need.  This means they purchase merchandise, such as caskets and vaults, at the time of sale and then store them, often outside or buried underground, until the time of death.  As a comparison, Pennsylvania funeral homes are required to place 100% of the money in a trust until the time of death.  This means the merchandise they provide is not purchased until the time of need.

Our desire is for all families to understand what is happening to their money when they make pre-arrangements to bury and memorialize a loved one.  To that end we encourage you to view this video

If you are interested in helping pass PA Senate Bill 874 to eliminate “constructive delivery,” please click here to contact your legislator today.

To learn more go to the PFDA website or contact F. Glenn Fleming and he will be happy to help you with any questions or concerns you may have.  Thank you for taking the time to consider this.
