Obituary of Clemence Ilene Herrington

Clemence Ilene “Clem” Herrington, 89, of Philipsburg, formerly of Black Moshannon, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg. Born November 15, 1926, in Wallaceton, she was the daughter of the late David A. and Belle Shimmel Dixon. On September 14, 1949, at the First Presbyterian Church in Philipsburg, she married John Edward Herrington, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, John H. “Jay” Herrington, of State College, Thomas E. “Tom” Herrington and his wife, Luahan S., of Danville, and Allen Troy Herrington and his wife, Melissa, of Philipsburg; former daughter-in-law, Sherrill H. Byron who Clem considered as her own daughter; two brothers, Stanley Dixon of Buffalo, NY and Edward Dixon and his wife, Janet, of Philipsburg; seven grandchildren, Jaytee, Wendi, Jaxen, Trentin and Halle Herrington, Brenton and Lauren Swartz; three great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Quinn and Fiona. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Marshall, Claude “Dee”, Gloria, Eloise Dixon, Lila Stephens and Bonita Kephart. Clem attended Philipsburg High School. She was active with the Philipsburg Class of 1944 with the Reunion Planning Committee. She was employed as a Nurse’s Aide at the Philipsburg State General Hospital for 31 years. Following her retirement, she continued to work serving others as a waitress, a job she loved to do. She worked in numerous restaurants in State College and Philipsburg. Clem attended the First Presbyterian Church in Philipsburg. She was also a member of the Philipsburg Elks Lodge # 1173, attending many Elks Conventions on the state and national level with her husband Jack, a dedicated Elk. Her and Jack were charter members of the Mountaineers Chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association in Philipsburg. Their love of camping led them to move permanently to Black Moshannon in 1975. She also enjoyed spending time at Tomahawk Pines Lodge with her family and friends. Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m., on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Dahlgren Funeral Home, 228 N. Centre Street, Philipsburg. An Elks memorial service will follow the visitation at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., on Monday, July 18, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church, 509 East Presqueisle Street, Philipsburg, with the Reverend Dr. Katie Kelly Hopper officiating. Burial will be in the Philipsburg Cemetery.
