Obituary of Elizabeth H. Ammerman

Elizabeth "Betty" Ammerman 100, of State College, loving wife, mother, and mother-in-law passed away August 14, 2016 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College. Betty was born on Flag Day June 14, 1916 in Elizabethville Pa. As a little girl growing up in Philadelphia she always thought all the flags being flown for Flag Day were in honor of her birthday. Betty was the daughter of the late Elmer and Evelyn (Walters) Hipp. She was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She was also a graduate of Hahnemann Medical College at Drexel University. Later she was a student at Penn State University where she went on to become President of her sorority Beta Sigma Phi. While there, she met the love of her life C. Reynold Ammerman. On June 8, 1946 in Philadelphia, she married Reynold who preceded her in death on August 19, 2013. On June 8, 2013 they had celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. After marriage, Betty was employed from, 1946- 1952 by the Ellen H. Richards Institute at Penn State University. She later was employed as a research assistant in animal virology for Dr. Howard Dunne at the Animal Disease Laboratory at Penn State University, retiring from there in 1978. Betty was always very active with community activities. She served on the board of the Easter Seals Society for fourteen years and served five years as its President. She was Trustee for the State College Women's Club. She volunteered for fund raising projects such as Meals on Wheels, WPSX Public Television, Centre County Home Health Care, Women's Resource Center, tour and information guide for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, just to name a few. Betty was also a member of the State College Business and Professional Women's Club and was awarded their nomination of "Woman of the Year" in 1990. In 1990 when asked by the BPW - What Do You See As a Woman's Place In The Business World? She replied: As women become better trained and assume higher positions, they add a different dimension to decision making. They have the power to change company policy concerning issues such as day care, maternity leave, and even paternity leave. Betty was also active at the state level too. While she was a member of BPW she attended all most every District and State Convention. She was awarded a Certificate of Citizen Service- PennServe by the then Governor of Pennsylvania Robert P. Casey. Betty was also an avid Mahjong and Bridge player teaching many the Art of the Deal. After retirement she looked forward to long family summer vacations at the Jersey Shores. Along with her husband and parents she was preceded in death by one sister Kathryn "Cassie" Ehmann and brother-in-law Fred Ehmann. She is survived by her son William and wife Vikki of State College, one-step grandson Lyn Hook Jr of Altoona. She is also survived by her beloved cat "Radar". She will be remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews. She especially looked forward to her weekly visits from her niece Maryjoe Beck and her husband Bob. Betty was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of State College where she had taught Sunday school for sixteen years. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Betty's memory to Grace Lutheran Church, 205 S. Garner St., State College, Pa. 16801 or Centre County Paws, 1401 Trout Rd, State College, Pa. 16801. A memorial service will be held at 11:00a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2016 at Grace Lutheran Church, 205 S. Garner St., State College.
