Obituary of Donald W. Mentzer

Donald (Don) W. Mentzer, of State College, died November 27 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. Born on February 13, 1930 in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late Charles F. Mentzer and Anna Alice (Byers) Mentzer. On December 10, 1953 he married Anna Mae Consalvo, who survives at home. He is survived by 3 children, Steven Mentzer (and his wife Sheila) of Oak Hill, VA, David Mentzer of State College, PA, and Susan McCoy (and her husband Matthew) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and 5 grandchildren, Jeffrey Mentzer of Arnold, MD, Janice Mentzer Lewis (and husband Chad) of Harrisonburg, VA, Christopher Mentzer (and wife Ethel) of Annapolis, MD, Jarren McCoy and Elena McCoy of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. His first great grandson is expected to be born in January 2017 in Harrisonburg, VA. He is also survived by his sister, Gertrude Mentzer of State College, PA. He was proceeded in death by his brother Charles, who passed away as a child. Don was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School. He served 2 years in the US Army, stationed in Korea. He graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. Don was employed as an Electrical Engineer by HRB Singer and HRB Systems for 30 years until his retirement in 1990. Don was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in State College where he faithfully worshipped for 56 years. Don was an avid reader and enjoyed reading both fiction and non fiction, studying theology and following politics. He enjoyed watching most sports (football, soccer, wrestling, baseball and basketball) and enthusiastically followed Penn State football. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Don was a loving and supportive father who faithfully attended all of his children's many games and activities. A visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday December 2, 2016 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton Street, State College. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 3, at Grace Lutheran Church, 205 South Garner Street, State College, with Rev. P. Stevens Lynn officiating, assisted by Rev. Larry Louder. Burial and committal service, with military honors, will be at Pine Hall Cemetery following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Grace Lutheran Church, 205 South Garner Street, State College, PA 16801.
