Obituary of Robert Yale Murray

Robert Yale Murray, 82, of State College died Friday, May 5, 2017, at home.

 

Born May 24, 1934, Angelica, New York, he was the son of the late Dayton Eugene and Laura Whitney Jones Murray. He married Ruth Hoxsey Goodwin, on February 9, 1962 who survives in the Atrium at the Village of Penn State.

 

He is survived by two children, Anne Murray Gambal and her husband Paul of Washington, DC; David Yale Murray and his wife Mary of Pleasant Gap; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Griggs Gambal of New York City, and Nicholas Yale Gambal of Washington, DC.

 

Bob was a 1952 graduate of Canaseraga Central School and a 1956 graduate of the Penn State University with a B.S. degree in Hotel Administration. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.

 

He served in the United States Army in France from 1956-1958.

 

He was employed by the Corning Glass Works for 35 years in the Consumer Products Division. He retired in 1995 as Head of Corporate Travel.

 

He was a communicant of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

 

Bob loved fly fishing, golf, sailing, skiing, Penn State sports, reading and playing duplicate bridge and backgammon with Village friends.

 

During his time in Rochester he was President of the Monroe Ski Club and a member of the Genessee Valley Club. In 1964 he became a non-resident member until 2011.

 

While in Elmira, New York, he was a member of the Keuka Yacht Club, and served as Commodore in 1975. He was a member of the Elmira Country Club from 1979-1995, and President in 1987.

 

He was a gallery guard at the Augusta National Golf Club, on the 14th Hole from 1996-2004. Bob was a communicant at Grace Episcopal Church in Elmira from 1979-1995, and served on the vestry. In State College he was a member of Burning Tee and the Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 208 West Foster Avenue, State College, with the Reverend Douglas Dailey officiating.

 

Inurnment will be in the St. Andrew's Columbarium.
