Obituary of John MacIndoe

John Walter MacIndoe, 90 of State College. died of heart failure on August 15, 2011 at the Village at Penn State. He was born in Bellefonte on September 17, 1920, the son of the late John Harper MacIndoe and Marie Lucas MacIndoe. On 25 July 1942 in State College he married Florence (Fody) Marquardt who died on 3 February 1996. On 8 November 1996 he married Mary Gee Tucker who died on November 16, 2005. He was graduated from Penn State University in 1942 with a BS degree in Chemistry. At that time he was awarded an Honorary graduate appointment into the Regular Army as a second lieutenant of infantry. During World War II he commanded a rifle company and an infantry battalion in Europe and was wounded four times. Later in his career he commanded an infantry battle group and was assigned to staff duty on the Army and Joint Staffs in the Pentagon and on NATO's Central Army Group Staff in Heidelberg, Germany. He was a graduate of the National War College at Fort McNair in Washington, DC and later served as a member of its faculty. He also earned an MA degree in International Relations from George Washington University in 1964. Colonel MacIndoe was retired from the Army in 1972 at the Pentagon, a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Upon his retirement he continued to live in Arlington, VA until 1992 when he returned to State College. After his retirement, Col. MacIndoe became very much involved in growing and exhibiting roses. He was appointed a Consulting Rosarian of the American Rose Society and became one of its Horticultural Rose Judges, He also served as president of the Arlington Rose Foundation and of the Potomac Rose Society. Later he served as Chairman of Judges of the Penn-Jersey District of the American Rose Society. He was a member of the State College Presbyterian Church. He is survived by one son, Dr. John Harper MacIndoe of Stillwater, MN, a sister, Lois M. Burkhard of Roaring Springs and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine MacIndoe Utzig, of Pittsburgh, who died March 9, 2009. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Koch Funeral Home of State College where a memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Joel T. Blunk on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. A visitation will be prior to the service from 1:00- 3:00 P.M. Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA on a later date. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Palmer Art Museum at Curtin Road, University Park, PA 16802 or the Penn State Library at 127 Paterno Library, Curtin Road, University Park, PA 16802 or the National Humane Society at 2100 L. St NW, Washington DC 20037.
