This month our theme is “Legacy and Loss.” When we lose people we love, their legacies live on in us and in this world. As Allison Gilbert said in her book Passed and Present: Keeping Memories of Loved Ones Alive, “Grief experts agree that taking steps to appropriately remember loved ones is actually essential for healing. Individuals who keep the memory of loved ones alive almost always fare better emotionally than those who don’t.”

Each week this month, I’m going to share five ideas about how to honor these legacies.

  1. Light a candle.
  2. Make a quilt out of their old clothes.
  3. Hold a memorial service or candlelight vigil.
  4. Finish any projects they were working on.
  5. Bring flowers to their grave and keep the area well-tended.
