One thing I really appreciate about comparing grief to waves is that you know an ocean wave eventually ends. As a wave builds and builds, on the other side it crashes and is gone. When I was in labor with our son, it helped me to liken each contraction to riding a wave. I could feel it build and as it did, I knew the end was on the other side – I hopefully rode those contraction waves. Sometimes they came one on top of the other, and other times there was space in between.
I think the same is true of grief waves, when you know they will eventually end, it makes the ride more hopeful. It doesn't mean more waves aren’t coming, but at least that particular one will end.
