According to the World Animal Day website, the first event organized was held in 1925 in Berlin by animal-magazine publisher Heinrich Zimmerman. The purpose of the original event remains a part of its mission today: to promote animal welfare and advocate for animal protection measures worldwide.Today, observances are held in countries around the world every Oct. 4, which coincides with the day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
