Obituary of Carl G. Williams Jr.

Carl G. “Dollar” Williams, Jr., 74, of State College, died on Thursday, July 23, 2015 of a heart attack in Altoona, PA. Born on June 13, 1941, in Altoona, he was the son of the late Carl G. and Betty Walter Williams. On June 25, 1988, he married Lynnea Zimmerman who survives. Also surviving is one son, Michael D. Williams and his wife, Cathy, of Peach Tree City, GA; three granddaughters, Kylie, Courtney and Cassidy. He was a 1959 graduate of Altoona High School and a 1963 graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, having completed his Freshman year at the Penn State Altoona campus and the remaining three years at University Park. Carl served in the United States Army Reserves from approximately 1967-1973. Starting at a very young age, Carl’s life revolved around sports. He played for the Altoona City League baseball team, earning MVP honors as well as leading the league in hits and runs batted in. Additionally, his Eldorado team won the City League Championships in 1964, 1966, 1968, 1969, and 1970. He also played basketball at Penn State Altoona leading his freshman team to a state championship and winning the Western Division for the first time in11 years. These were accomplishments of which he was extremely proud. In addition to baseball, Carl was an excellent softball player and managed several slow-pitch teams for quite a few years. He loved the competition on the field but it was the bonding with his teammates and their families that meant the most to him. He had a very large and close knit “family of friends” with whom he loved. They were a brother-hood, he was their leader, organizer, and their “Skip”. Carl immensely loved golfing at every opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and competition with his friends, wife and son. He belonged to the Burning Tee Golf League at the Penn State courses in addition to organizing golf outings for his friends and buddies. Golf was his passion in the most recent years and he was always “tinkering” to improve his game. Family was very important to Carl and spending time together and showing support was always a priority. He shared a very loving relationship with his wife Lynnea, and he was especially proud of his son and three granddaughters. And equally important in his life were his dogs – Fuzzy, Tasha, Divot and Chipper. He enjoyed travelling and made several vacation trips to Arizona in recent years. He claimed Sedona to one his most favorite places because of it’s incredible beauty and warmth. He spent quite a bit of his spare time reading, and he loved watching TV and his many “shows”. He enjoyed watching just about any kind of sport and was as an avid Pittsburgh Pirate and Steelers fan. Carl touched the lives of so very many people and in a very special way. His passing will leave an immense whole for so many. He will be missed beyond measure. He retired in 2001 as the Director of Finance for the Office of Physical Plant at Penn State University after 33 years of service.
