Ann McLaren

Obituary of Ann Louise McLaren

Ann Louise McLaren, 64, of State College, died Thursday, November 1, 2018, at home.

Born September 20, 1954, in Tulsa, OK, she was the daughter of the late Paul Lee and Barbara Ann Grubb Terwillinger.  On March 27, 1976 she married Rhett D. McLaren, who survives.

Also surviving are two children, Adrienne E. Lindquist and her husband, Eric, of State College and Ian D. McLaren of Philadelphia; a brother, Mark Terwillinger of Old Lyme, CT; three grandchildren, Fiona, Logan and Oliver.

She was a 1972 graduate of Fox Chapel High School in Pittsburgh. Ann received a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in History from Allegheny College, Meadville, in 1976. In 1985 she received a Master’s degree in Education from Penn State University.

Ann was employed at Penn State University for 37 years. She began working in Veterans’ Affairs before moving to the Learning Support Center where she would eventually spend 25 years as the director. During her tenure she grew the Learning Center from a two-person operation to a nationally known and respected center for instruction and support for all students, adding supplemental instruction and training tutors to be available for drop-in tutoring.

She was a dedicated member of the State College Presbyterian Church. During her 35 years as an active member of the church she served on numerous committees, taught Sunday School, and served on the board of Elders as well as being the clerk of the session for a number of years. Most recently she was one of the founding members of the diversity committee, a subject close to her heart.

She was a lifelong member of Kappa Alpha Theta serving as an advisor for 15 years as well as an academic advisor for many years. Although dealing with young women can be a challenge she loved them dearly and always pushed them to become all they could be.

She touched many lives and will be truly missed by those who had the good fortune to know her during her time on this earth.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m., on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at the State College Presbyterian Church, 132 W. Beaver Ave, State College, with the Reverend Dean Lindsey officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

Private burial will be in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Sigel, PA
