Obituary of Morris Schroeder

Morris E. Schroeder December 13, 1931 - November 5, 2011 Morris E. Schroeder, 79, of State College, died November 5, 2011. He was born December 13, 1931 in Milton, PA son of the late Thomas Allen and Stella Moser Schroeder. He received his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1953. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Morris then worked at Penn State as an Ag Engineering Extension Specialist from 1955 to 1956. He received his M.S. in 1958 and Ph.D. in 1965 in Ag Engineering from Purdue University. He returned to Penn State to resume his professional career in mushroom research, which began his life long interest in the industry. Morris chaired the Mushroom Test Demonstration Facility committee resulting in ground breaking mushroom research accomplishments. He published and presented his research internationally. His mushroom expertise included energy efficiency, carbon dioxide control and computer environmental controls. He retired as a Professor Emeritus in 1986. He married Helen Norris on May 29, 1954. They have four children. He enjoyed hunting, traveling, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He loved to tinker with antique farm machinery and could fix almost anything. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, State College Rotary and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity and a Life member of the American Society Agricultural and Biological Engineering and other honorary societies. His activities and volunteer interests include Boy Scout Troop 31 Committee Chairman, BSA Order of the Arrow recognition, Boalsburg Heritage Museum, Pasto Agricultural Museum, Meals On Wheels, Nittany Antique Machinery Association and PSU Hintz Family Alumni Center volunteer. He was a father and husband who is survived by his wife, Helen Norris Schroeder; son Gary and wife Laurey with grandchildren Zachary, Quintin, his wife Ashley and Wyatt; daughter Joyce and husband Bruce with grandson Alex; son Glenn; daughter Lisa and husband Mark with grandchildren Van and Caroline. He is survived by two sisters; Agnes Noll and Almaretta Hupp. Friends will be received at Koch Funeral Home Tuesday, November 8, 2011 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM and 6:00 - 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be 10:00 AM Wednesday November 9, 2011 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in State College, PA. A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal service at Pine Hall Cemetery.
