Obituary of Samuel Swanson

Samuel Richard Swanson,79, of State College, died Thursday, November 24, 2011 at his residence. Born April 28, 1932, in Dubois, he was the son of the late Richard A. and Mary D. Gillung Swanson. He is survived by three children, Brenda Swanson-Biearman and her husband, Frederick, of McMurray, Carol L. Swanson and Deanne L. Swanson both of State College, and three grandchildren, Stephanie Biearman, Samuel Biearman, and Lyndon Swanson. He was a member of the Dubois High School class of 1950. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University, graduating in 1957. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, stationed on the USS Coral Sea and the USS Midway. He worked as an Electrical Engineer in IEAS for 23 years for Penn State, retiring in 1993. He previously was employed by HRB Singer and General Electric. Samuel was a member of the Boalsburg Elks. He enjoyed gardening, golfing at the Elks golf course, crossword puzzles, and computing. He loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren and his canine companion, Lucy. A visitation will be held, Sunday, November 27, 2011 from 1-3pm at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, State College. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 28, 2011 at 2 pm at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Louder officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Hall Cemetery, State College. The family would like to give special thanks to the Houck Care and Cleaning and In Home Care Service for the loving care they provided for our father. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 123 South Sparks St., State College, PA 16801 or to Centre County Paws, 1401 Trout Road, State College, PA 16801.
