Obituary of Alexander Dewar Black

Alexander Dewar Black, of State College, died Friday January 8, 2021 in Aiken, South Carolina while he was visiting his daughter.

 

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Harold C. and Margaret C. Black.  

 

He is predeceased in death by his wife of sixty years, Janet M. Black who passed in May 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Ellen M. Valentine of Aiken, South Carolina and his son, Jay D. Black, his wife Shaila and their two children, Ayesha and Elma, of East Elmhurst, NY

 

He graduated from Wyoming High School in Wyoming, OH.  Upon graduation, he served in the Navy. Upon his return from service, he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University.  He later received his master's degree from Westminster College. Following his graduation, he owned a garden store in York, Pennsylvania.  He later began his professional career in Continuing Education for Pennsylvania State University.  After working for several of the Penn State branch campus locations, he moved to State College in1968 where he worked for the rest of his career for Penn State Continuing Education. Alex and Janet were active members of the State College community.

 

He was a member of the State College Presbyterian Church. Due to Covid, there is no scheduled service. Burial will be in Pine Hall Cemetery at a later date.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the State College Food Bank in memory of Alexander Black.
