Obituary of Joanne H. Chuckran

Joanne H. Chuckran, 94, of State College, died August 23, 2021 in her home.

Born in 1927 at the Glenn Hospital in State College, she was the daughter of Fred and Harriet Holben. In 1948, she married John R. Chuckran, who died in 1991.

Joanne graduated from State College High School in 1945 and from Penn State in 1949. It was at Penn State that she met and married John. During their tenure at Allegheny College, where John's duties took them, she was Assistant Registrar of the College and advisor to Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. They returned to Penn State in 1970, and she held a part-time position there in the Office of Admissions for ten years. They then moved to the University of Rhode Island for eight years before retiring to Harris Acres in State College.

A life-long Presbyterian, Joanne served in many capacities. She directed adult, youth, and bell choirs at the Meadville Church, was an elder and trustee at the State College Church, and was a member of Huntingdon Presbytery's Christian Education Committee for many years. She served the Newport, Rhode Island Church as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, and was a member of the Presbytery of Southern New England's Nomination and Records Committee.

Upon retirement to State College in 1988, she served as a volunteer at Centre Community Hospital and was treasurer of the Auxiliary. Her church work continued at State College Presbyterian Church as a member of the Worship Committee, church historian, and Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by two daughters, Ginny Eisenhuth and husband Paul, of Pennsylvania, and Nancy Shelow of North Carolina. Four grandsons also survive; CAPT Brian Eisenhuth, USNavy, wife Kristi and son Connor of Florida; Dr. Scott Eisenhuth, wife Dr. Kati Eisenhuth and sons Ethan and Max of State College; Doug Shelow of North Carolina; Chris Shelow, wife Gaby and son Lochlan of North Carolina.
