Susie Sherritt

Obituary of Susie C. Sherritt

Susie Sherritt died on December 30, 2021, at the age of 96.

Born Susie Carolyn Naaden on October 5, 1925, in Braddock ND to Thore and Birdie Naaden, she grew up on the family ranch with her 7 siblings.

She received a BS in Home Economics from North Dakota State College. During her college career, she played on the NDSC women's basketball team. After graduation, she taught school in Hunter North Dakota, hometown of her future husband, Grant Sherritt. They were married on September 11, 1949, in Bismarck ND. The next day, they moved to State College PA where they remained for the rest of their lives. Sue and her family enjoyed regular trips back to ND over the years where fond memories were made visiting the extended family there.

Sue devoted her adult life to making a home for Grant and their 3 children and 5 grandchildren. She was an avid cook, seamstress, and gardener. She also enjoyed knitting, embroidery, jigsaw puzzles, Mahjong and watching sports, especially Penn State Wrestling. Over the years, Sue volunteered at church and many community organizations. She and Grant delivered Meals on Wheels for almost 25 years. Sue devoted many hours to tending her beautiful flower garden, and she was always happy to share cut flowers and perennial divisions. She was also generous with her beautiful needlework creations, and they are treasured by the recipients. In recent years, she knitted afghans for all her grandchildren, which will continue to feel like a hug from Grandma Sue whenever they are used.

Sue and Grant enjoyed the fellowship of a large circle of friends who were always welcome for a meal or a spare bed. If you happened to drop by, there was always a pot of coffee and cookies at the ready. She was a gracious hostess who could set a table and present a meal to rival Julia Child, but she was quick to criticize her own cooking. At the first bite, she would announce that the meat was dry or the gravy lumpy. She was wrong every time. Among her family and friends, she was famous for her Cinnamon Rolls and Norwegian Christmas baked goods.

Sue is survived by brother Pete Naaden; daughters Carol Sherritt Ritter and Tracy Sherritt Gray; Granddaughters Julie Ritter Loebs, Erica Ritter Spencer, Abigail Gray and Kylie Sherritt; 5 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Grant, her husband of 68 years, son Alan Sherritt, and granddaughter Zan Gray Bealmear.
