Mike was my ELD Capstone Advisor on the Baobab Project and we traveled together on his 1st trip to Dakar, Senegal in December 2012. After I graduated, Mike and I continued working together through the Engineering Leadership Alumni Society, and he served as a mentor through my early career. Mike supported me in my applications to graduate school and my current position with Penn State. I would not be where I am today without Mike's unwavering support. I will forever be grateful to Mike for his leadership, mentorship and passion for serving others. Learning from his example has made me a better engineer and human being. Thanks, Mike and RIP.

I was shocked to read of Mike's passing. I first met him in Schenectady when we were members of the Jaycees and later connected when we both were ushers at Our Lady of Grace, Ballston Lake. He'll be missed.

I was very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. He supported Penn State in many ways, but I knew him mainly by his Engineering Science connection (PSESMAS). His dedication to students was particularly obvious to me, as he organized a session to promote interview skills and lobbied employers on behalf of ESM students. Mike will be missed!

Mike Erdman was an amazing colleague, boss, and friend. He always supported us, believed in us, and gave us the space to allow us to add our mark to the vision of expanding leadership development for students. He smiled through challenges, was calm under pressure, and really taught me what it meant to be a good leader. His wisdom, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to student development was the foundation for our growth and success. I am forever changed by working with Mike and will forever be grateful for what he taught me. RIP Mike.

Mike was an inspirational member of the ASEE LEAD and COMPETE communities, sharing his warmth, smile, and quiet wisdom with all. His passion for student leadership development and global engineering experience taught me to expand my horizons beyond the classroom as a site for leadership learning. My condolences to Mike's family, colleagues, and friends. He will be missed,

Mike was a wonderful colleague and an extraordinary supporter of Penn State. Working with him was an honor and a pleasure. His energy and entrepreneurial spirit always amazed me. He was tireless in his pursuit of new ways to improve the education of students in ESM and in the Leadership Minor. His impact on students is beyond measure.

Mike was a great colleague. He and I had a fun trip to Peru in June 2017, along with three other Penn Staters. We enjoyed putting together an annual program for Penn State students to spend six weeks in Peru. That program continues.
Mike was a great friend of students. Kind and gentle, soft spoken but also uncompromising on human values, he was a wonderful mentor for engineering undergrads.
I will certainly miss him. My sincere condolences to the Erdman family at this difficult time. Rest assured that, as Mike was a true blue Penn Stater who always thought of serving the university community, he will be remembered for long.

We are so very sorry to hear of Professor Erdman’s passing. He was one of my daughter’s favorite professors. She loved the Leadership Development program. He took her along with several other students to Africa for an engineering project. She learned so much during that trip. When my husband and I count our blessings, we always include Professor Erdman for how he instilled the confidence that our daughter gained from traveling with him and for his teachings. He left a wonderful legacy. He will be missed.

Mike was very passionate about providing cross cultural global experiences to engineering students. At his core, he was an engineer, in his heart he was a leader, providing countless opportunities for his students to learn, grow, and experience the world. But he also had a spirit for adventure. These pictures show Mike helping students troubleshoot issues with the Baobab processing machine, a successful demonstration of the Baobab machine grinding the fruit to powder, and my favorite picture of Mike on a trip to see gorillas in the wild. While I had the opportunity to go on many international trips with Mike, I did not go on the one where he visited the gorillas but it is my favorite picture. He was absolutely thrilled and this picture perfectly captures the utter joy on his face. - Dena Lang
