Obituary of Wayne Bishop M.D.

Dr Bishop was born in Pleasant Unity, Pa. The son of Victor Addison Bishop and Margaret Brinker Bishop . He attended Ambridge, Pa. schools graduating salutatorian from Ambridge High School in 1949. He then attended Penn State College 1949-1953, and was commissioned 2nd Lt US Army Infantry. He is survived by a brother, Neal Brinker Bishop of Ambridge, Pa. Wayne was married to Arlene Knouse Bishop who has predeceased him. Together they had four children: Wayne E. Bishop, jr. and his wife Judy; David C. Bishop and his wife Kim; Lauren Ann Schmidt and her husband Peter; and Jennifer Lynne Morgan and her husband Harry. Dr. Bishop attended The University of Pittsburgh Medical School, and during his second year he was promoted to 1st Lt US Army MSC, commanding officer University of Pittsburgh MSC Detachment. He was a member of Skull and Bones. He continued his postgraduate training at Columbia Hospital. Upon completion of his training at Columbia Hospital he was commissioned Capt US Army Medical Corps, and was stationed at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. After this tour he was transferred to 3rd Gun Btn 82ND Field Artillery in Giessen, Germany as a combat surgeon. Doc Bishop elected to stay with his combat Btn rather than being transferred to the 97th Gen. Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. Upon his discharge, and return to the United States, he opened a private pediatric practice in State College, Pa., He practiced there for forty-three years. He was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He practiced at the former Center Community Hospital and Mount Nittany Medical Center. He married his wife Lee Ann Nuebling in 1977, who joined him as his friend, companion and love, along with her five children: Robert M. Ballenger; Steven J. Ballenger and his wife Patti; Donice J. Likovich and her husband Ronald; Richard B Ballenger and his wife Charlene; and The Rev. Brett Ballenger, to form a truly integrated loving family, enjoying many truly wonderful family get-togethers, vacations, and trips. Doc B is also survived by many grandchildren Nancy Ann, Arlene, Jason, Lenore, Hannah, Gabby, Jessica, John, Daniel, Charlie, Alli, Travis, Dustin, Scott and Ryan. He is also survived by four great grandsons, his little fishing buddy, Joshua, as well as Timothy, Paul and Levi; great granddaughter, Hannah. Visitation will be held at Koch Funeral Home Tuesday July 24th from 2-4 pm and 6-8pm. A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 205 S. Garner Street in State College, Pennsylvania on Wednesday July 25th at 12 noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Four Diamonds Fund via the Penn State Dance Marathon, 210 Hetzel Union Bldg, University Park, PA 16802.
