Obituary of Clarice Norton

Clarice Wilma Tibbetts Norton, 91, suffered a stroke and died peacefully on November 15, 2012, at Wynwood House in Centre Hall, PA. She was born on Aug. 24, 1921, in Farmington, Maine, a daughter of Raymond A. and Gladys Marble Tibbetts. Clarice was married on May 30, 1942, to George E. Norton, Jr., who preceded her in death in 1995. Clarice is survived by two daughters, Claire N. Cox and Nan and her husband, Webb, Miller, both of State College; one sister, Patricia Connell of Segabo Lake, ME.; one sister-in-law Leah Tibbetts, of Cape Elizabeth, ME.; many grandchildren including Scott A. Cox and his wife, Dawn Morningstar, of Bryn Mawr; David A. Cox and his wife, Kelli, of Hicksville, OH; Katherine Horner and her husband, Brian, of Carlisle; Karen Rhoads and her husband, Joseph, of Pine Grove Mills, who resides in the old homestead with their family; Kathleen Miller of State College; and 6 step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles E. Norton and infant daughter, Augusta Lee; two brothers, Wayne Tibbetts and Philip Tibbetts, and one sister, Elaine Tibbetts Sawyer. Clarice and George moved to PA around 1946 when George secured machinist work with the Ordinance Research Lab at Penn State University. They lived briefly in Stormstown, Pleasant Gap, and State College before making their permanent home in Pine Grove Mills. She worked a variety of jobs, her longest employment being with O.W. Houts and Son in the hardware department. Clarice was an active member of the Ferguson Twp. Lioness Club for many years. Many patrons of St. Vincent de Paul's thrift shop will remember her service there. She was honored as St. Vincent de Paul's Volunteer of the Year in 2004. She remained active there until her first stroke in 2009. Her delight with the word games of Upwords and Scrabble remained with her even during her long recovery time. Clarice and George spent many happy times touring the western United States in their motor home during early retirement years. They also enjoyed a trip to Ireland with their daughters, and in later years, Clarice traveled to Australia, a trip she'd always dreamed of taking. Clarice will possibly best be remembered for her abundant sharing of bouquets and transplants from the bounty of her overflowing flower gardens. There will be no public visitation. A celebration of her life will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions to honor Clarice's memory may be made to one of her favorite charities, the Smile Train, their motto being: "Changing the world one smile at a time." The Smile Train provides surgery to children born with a deformed cleft lip and cleft palate: PO Box 96208, Washington, D.C. 20090-6208. The family wishes to acknowledge the kindnesses and tender care so generously given by Wynwood House staff and residents and Centre Home Care Hospice staff and volunteers. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com.
