Obituary of John Huck

John Lloyd Huck, Jr., 90, of State College, PA, died Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Mount Nittany Medical Lloyd was born on July 17, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY, a son of John Lloyd and Adrienne Warner Huck. He was married to Dorothy Foehr Huck on November 20, 1943, in Tucson, Arizona. Lloyd entered Penn State University in 1940 and graduated with a degree in Chemistry in 1946. His education was interrupted by service in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 where he was a flight instructor and a pilot on B-29 bombers. After graduation Lloyd joined Hoffmann LaRoche, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, as a research chemist. In 1959 he joined Merck & Co., Inc. as Director of Marketing and retired in 1986 as Chairman of the Board. After his retirement he became Chairman of the Board and CEO of Nova Pharmaceutical Company, a start up pharmaceutical research company, until 1991. During his business career Lloyd was President of the Penn State Alumni Council, Chairman of the Board of Penn State's Board of Trustees, an Alumnus Fellow of the College of Medicine and the College of Science and was named a Distinguished Alumnus. The Institutes of Life Sciences and the building in which it is housed are named after Lloyd and his wife. He was also chairman of the Board of Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ and served on a number of corporate boards. His love of flying continued after his service in the Army Air Corps and he was an active pilot until just shortly before his 90th birthday. Lloyd is survived by his beloved wife Dottie, whom he met in their first week at Penn State in 1940, a son Lloyd E. Huck, two daughters, Jeanne Leslie-Hughes and Virginia Stalcup, her husband, Steven Stalcup, four grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Visitation will be 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., Saturday, December 22, 2012, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton Street, State College. Burial will be private at Whitemarsh Cemetery in Ambler, PA. Memorial contributions can be made to the School of Chemistry, Penn State University, 201 Old Main, University Park, PA , 16802 Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College.
