Obituary of William Shawley

William Hollis Shawley, 79, of Bellefonte, PA passed away on January 1, 2013 at Hearthside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in State College. Bill was born in Boalsburg on May 15, 1933, the only son of Calvin W. and Miriam Meek Shawley. Bill was a 1951 graduate of State College High School and a 1956 Penn State graduate. He majored in Animal Husbandry and was very proud to have been a member of the 1953 National Championship wrestling team. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. In 1957 he joined the Peace Corp and spent time in Vietnam teaching them better farming methods. Upon his return to the United States he worked for Rath Meat Packing Company before forming a partnership in a construction company. He was a life-long entrepreneur involved in a variety of business ventures throughout his lifetime. For many years Bill was a member of the Pennsylvania Builders Association. Survivors include his three sisters, Page Wilson of Mesa, AZ; Sue Barr of rural Port Matilda; and Tish (Terry) Slagle of State College. Former wife Marion Eden Shoemaker of North Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Bill will always be remembered for his perseverance, positive attitude and determination. Family will receive friends from 12:30PM - 1:30PM on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Koch's Funeral home in State College. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home at 1:30PM with Pastor Brian Judy officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Centre County PAWS, 1401 Trout Road State College, PA 16801 or Horizons Hospice, 309 E. Plank Road, Suite 100, Altoona, PA 16602-4111.
