Obituary of Richard Barrickman

Dr. Richard Vernon Barrickman, 87, of State College, died Friday, March 22, 2013, at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Born June 20, 1925, in Clairton, he was the son of the late William A. and Fannie L. Duff Barrickman. On June 19, 1948 he married Mary Louise Jones Barrickman who preceded him in death on July 21, 2011. He is survived by three children, Richard C. Barrickman and his wife, Kathy, of State College, David A. Barrickman and his wife, Donna, of Malvern, Barbara L. Slaughter and her husband, Richardson, of Cave Creek, AZ; seven grandchildren, Tyler Barrickman and his wife, Lauren, Marie Bradley and her husband, Dan, Adam Barrickman and his wife, Britta, Abbey Gutowski and her husband, Kurt, David "Bo" Barrickman and his wife, Amy, Jayne Barrickman, Gracy Slaughter; eight great-grandchildren, Ava Barrickman, Joel and Aiden Canner, Anders Barrickman, David J. Bradley, John Miller Gutowski, Morgan Gutowski and Bryn Barrickman. Richard graduated from Clairton High School. He attended Penn State University, Notre Dame Midshipmen School, Pittsburgh University and graduated from Pittsburgh Dental School in June of 1951. He served as an Ensign in the United States Navy during World War II. He opened his dentist practice in State College in September of 1954. He retired in 1986. Most of the years he practiced side by side with his brother, Bill. He was a member of State College Presbyterian Church since 1955, where he was on the Board of Deacons, past Elder and Chairman of "The 50 million fund." Richard was a life member of BPOE Lodge #1600. He served on the State College Police Civil Service Commission for over 10 years and was a member of Centre Hills Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing in Canada, hunting, bridge and poker. Richard cared very deeply for his family, church, community and country. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by his family very much. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 301 Grant Street, Suite 900 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15219.
