Obituary of Patricia R. Lloyd

Patricia R. Lloyd, 89, of State College, Pennsylvania, died peacefully at her home on April 16, 2024. Patricia (Pat or Patty to her friends) will be remembered for her love of family and friends, patience, beauty, grace, kindness, musical talent, piano and music lessons, community involvement, generosity, strength, love of travel, hosting of parties, and joy of life.

Patricia was born in Roseau, Minnesota, to the late Arthur and Ruth (Berentzen) Wold on March 17, 1935. She graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1953 and went to the University of Minnesota where she met Wallis (Wally) Lloyd, a PhD student in Chemical Engineering, who would become her husband of 56 years. They married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, Minnesota in 1955. Wally was recruited for the Atoms for Peace program, which sent him to Berkeley, California, where Patty continued her college education. Soon after they moved to State College, where they lived the rest of their lives. She completed her undergraduate degree at Penn State in 1963 and earned a master's degree in music education from Penn State in 1979.

Second only to family and friends, Patty loved the piano. She loved playing it and teaching it. She taught pre-school music at the Music Academy, piano instruction at Juniata College, and piano classes at State College Area High School. She taught private piano lessons from her home year after year right up to the end. In addition to traditional lessons, she provided her students with computer activities, monthly group lessons, and several recitals every year, which always included plenty of homemade refreshments. After the passing of her close friend in 1984, and through her leadership role with the Central Pennsylvania Music Teachers' Association, she started the Phyllis Triolo Competition. The competition has been held every year since 1985, and she remained actively involved. Patty played the organ for St. Paul's United Methodist Church and then the organ and piano for Grace Lutheran Church, where she played for the Easter sunrise service this year.

She is preceded in death by her husband Wally who died in 2012, her sons Brian (2014) and Paul (2023), her parents, and her brother Paul. She is survived by her brother Ken (Sue) Wold, her daughter Sharon (Marc Evans) Lloyd-Evans, son Kevin (Rose) Lloyd, Paul's widow Dottie (Babcock) Lloyd, Brian's widow Karen (Meyer) Lloyd, seven grandchildren: Matt and Samantha (Paul), Savanah and Delaney (Brian), and Travis, Eric, Rebecca (Sharon), two great-granddaughters: Isabella and Madeline (Savannah), and numerous nieces and nephews.

The service will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contribution in her name can be made to the Phyllis Triolo Competition and sent to: CPMTA 2465 Buchenhorst Road State College PA 16801 or to The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, 403 S. Allen St., State College, PA 16801.
