Obituary of Mary Helen Elbin

Mary Helen Elbin was born on April 1, 1925 in Chambersburg, PA to Paul Mowen Kegerreis and Agnes Mettler Kegerreis. She died peacefully in her sleep on December 16, 2023 in Easton PA. She was 98 years old.

Mary Helen was preceded in death by her husband T. Blair Elbin (November 1, 2001) and her brother David Kegerreis (January 29, 1970). She leaves behind many dear friends and her children, Gregory Blair (Susan) Elbin and Wendy Elbin (Fred) Luce. Her four grandchildren were the joy of her heart; William (Heidi), Greer and Ailsa Luce and Rachel Elbin (Dan Babcock). She also took great delight in her great grandchildren, Wilson Harman, and Ada and Willa Babcock Elbin.

Mary Helen's early years were spent surrounded not only by her parents but also her great aunts in a large family home in Chambersburg PA. She later moved with her parents to Lewistown, PA and was working as a nurse when she met Blair on a blind date at an IBM picnic. They fell in love and were married on October 11, 1952 and moved to Oneida Street in State College PA where they lived for 60 years, raising their children and developing lifelong friendships with some very special neighbors. Mary Helen was a member of Faith United Church of Christ and later St. Peter's United Church of Christ where she enjoyed going out to lunch after church with friends.

Mary Helen loved dogs, reading, swimming and being outdoors. Many people may remember seeing her walk her dogs along Westerly Parkway, rain or shine. She loved Saturday visits to Whipples Dam and hikes in the woods around State College. She wasn't fond of cooking but made the best chocolate fudge and peanut butter scotch bars at Christmas. Mary Helen was a devoted daughter, wonderful mother, loyal friend and an amazing grandmother. She will be missed dearly.

Family and friends will be received from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday, February 17th in the Fellowship Hall of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, 1795 W. College Ave., State College, PA. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM with Reverend John Wagner officiating.
