Obituary of Charlotte Ann Samson

Charlotte "Sam" Ann Samson, 86, of State College, passed from this life at Mount Nittany Medical Center on Thursday, February 18, 2016, after suffering a massive hemorrhagic stroke on Saturday morning. She was born in Providence, RI, on October 1, 1929, to the late Elizabeth (Moran) Simpson at The Providence Lying-In Hospital. Charlotte's birth name was Anna Simpson. She was adopted by the late Henry T. and Jesse (Young) Samson, of Providence, RI, at the age of 6 months. Charlotte graduated from Gorton High School in Longmeadow, RI, in 1948. She received her R.N. from the Westchester School of Nursing in Valhalla, NY, in 1953. She worked at Madison Park Hospital of Adelphi College in Brooklyn, NY, as head nurse of the medical unit. She was then employed for twenty years at the A. Holly Patterson Nursing Home, Uniondale, NY, as the charge nurse of a dementia unit. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1976 from Molloy College, Rockville Centre, NY. After her retirement in 1984, Charlotte built a log cabin in Aldenville and worked at Martin Hardware in Honesdale. She moved to State College in 1991. She enjoyed fishing, word search puzzles, oil & acrylic painting, reading mysteries, watching movies, and listening to music. Over the years, she rescued and loved 7 cats and 3 dogs. She swam at the Courtyard by Marriott swim club in State College five days a week at 6 AM for seventeen years with her women's swim club friends. Charlotte is survived by her adopted daughter, Sydney Bennington, and her good friend and daughter-in-law, Tyler Bennington, both of State College. In addition to her parents, Charlotte was predeceased by her son, Robert James Hammond; her brothers, John "Jack" Gadson Samson and James Lyon Samson; her step-mother, Thelma (Andrews) Samson; and her step-father, Bernard Meeker. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton St., State College, on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at the Pine Hall Cemetery, State College. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center - Hospice Fund, 1800 East Park Ave., State College, PA 16803; or Pets Come First, 2451 General Potter Highway, Centre Hall, PA 16828.
