Born January 20, 1935, in LeContes Mills, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Irma Cole Smith. On April 10, 1954 Mona married Hayden Ray Butler, who preceded her in death on August 29, 2017.

Mona graduated from Clearfield High School in 1953. She worked as a library aide for the State College Area School District from 1971 until her retirement in 1997. Mona loved working with the students, and she was very passionate about integrating computer technology into their educational experience. Mona was very involved with her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, and dearly loved her Shih Tzu dogs. She was an active member of the community, volunteering for State College Area Meals on Wheels, participating in Masonic activities with Hayden, and working to support local elections and voter registration.
