Obituary of Michael Roeckel

Michael William Roeckel, 69, of State College and Hawley, died Sunday, October 21 at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

Born in Lykens, he was the son of the late Edward and Anita Derr Roeckel. On October 2, 1982 he married Mary M. Adams, who along with his faithful companion, Pilot, will miss him deeply.

He is also survived by brothers Edward Roeckel and his wife Anita of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Jeffrey Roeckel of Browndale, and his sister-in law Margot Adams Clauss, her husband Peter and his nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Forest City High School, Mike earned a BS in Computer Science and a MS in Acoustics from Penn State. In 2013 he retired from the Applied Research Lab at Penn State as a Senior Research Engineer.

For 19 years he served the Borough of State College on the Zoning Hearing Board and the Planning Commission, both of which he chaired. He was a past president of the State College Kiwanis Club and enjoyed his role with the Track and Field Awards at Special Olympics.

His talents included woodworking, breadmaking, sailing, and a deep admiration of American antiques and glass.

A celebration of his life will be scheduled in Hawley at a future date.
