Obituary of Leonard Newman

Leonard Newman, 81, died Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at The Hearthside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in State College. Born September 17, 1930, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Maurice and Frieda Newman. In 1960 he married Shirley Charney, who died April 12, 2003. He is survived by his loving companion, Jane Olmstead of State College; two children, Jeffrey Robert Newman of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Dyana Cohen of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, Andrew Michael Cohen and Zachary Charles Cohen; a brother, Walter Newman and his wife, Midge, of Naperville, Ill.; and a sister, Helen Dickerman of Los Angeles, California. Leonard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was Jewish by faith. He was an Interior Designer and designed showroom floors for furniture houses. Leonard was a recognized artist with a piece of his art in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Many articles recognizing his designs were in the interior design trade magazines. His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at the Geigle Funeral Home, Linglestown, with the Rabbi Kessler officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 123 S. Sparks St., State College, PA 16801.
