Obituary of Rebecca M. Berg

Rebecca M. Berg, 86, passed away on June 9, 2023. Rebecca was born in rural Burrton, Kansas on June 15, 1936, a daughter of the late Carl and Olive Hoskinson. On June 15, 1958 she married Clyde C. Berg who preceded her in death on March 15, 2002.

Rebecca is survived by her children Judy (Chuck) West of Atlantic Beach, FL, Karen (Scott) Henninger of Bellefonte, PA, and Larry (Jill) Berg of Richland, WA. Also surviving are her grandchildren, DJ (Whitney) West and their sons Brennan and Dylan of Jacksonville, FL, Sean (Alexandra) West and their daughters Blakely and Quinn of Mount Laurel, NJ, Alex Duncan of State College, PA, Margaret (Tyler) Harpster of Manassas, VA, Adam Berg of Richland WA, and Eric (Chloe) Berg of Richland, WA along with step-grandchildren Danielle (Jason) Gerzseyni and their children Kaylie and Karson of Port Matilda, PA, and Rachel Henninger of State College, PA, as well as her sister-in-law, Millie Hoskinson of Hutchinson, KS. Also surviving are many special nieces and nephews, and her dear roommate Dolly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, her sister and brother-in law Pauline and Irvin Atkinson, her brother Orval Hoskinson, and her special friend Nate Hartwig.

After graduating from Burrton High School, Rebecca worked at Kansas Power and Light in Hutchinson, KS until her marriage to Clyde when they moved to Stillwater, OK and she was employed by the Veterinary Science department at Oklahoma State University. Upon Clyde's graduation from Oklahoma State, they moved to Pullman, WA where Rebecca cared for the children of the families of fellow graduate students. Rebecca and Clyde made lifelong friends in Pullman, where their daughters were born.

After Clyde's graduation from Washington State University, they moved to State College, PA where Rebecca raised her young family and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, actively involved in United Methodist Women, singing in the choir, and serving in volunteer positions. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing many outfits for herself, her children, and grandchildren as well as mending and alternations for friends and neighbors. She was a member of the Penn State Faculty Women's club needlecraft group where she shared her quilting and other talents.

When her children were in their teens, she worked at A Stitch In Time yarn shop where she shared her knitting, crocheting, needlepoint and counted cross stitch skills. When that shop closed, she worked at Joann Fabrics until she retired to care for her local grandchildren, Alex & Maggie, who she lovingly helped raise.

Rebecca is a member of Mt. Nittany United Methodist church. She supported their football dinners for many years by selling tickets, warmly greeting everyone who passed through the door.

In addition to her needlework skills, Rebecca enjoyed triumphing at a game of Aggravation, a big bowl of ice cream, particularly if it was homemade, a juicy slice of watermelon, college football and basketball, barbecued chicken, and laughing with friends and family.

The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Centre Care for the compassion and love they showered on Rebecca over the last two and a half years.

Visitation will be from 12-2pm on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Branch Rd., State College, PA.

Memorial service will follow at 2pm with Pastor Carl Hill and Pastor Michael Swimley officiating. Burial will be in the Meriden, KS cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church, 1500 East Branch Road, State College PA 16801 or Center Care, 150 Persia Road Bellefonte, PA 16823 with a note in the memo that is a memorial for Rebecca Berg.
