Obituary of Glenn Elwood Smith

Glenn Elwood Smith, 88, of Pleasant Gap, died Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Eagle Valley Personal Care Home.

Born August 14, 1934, in State College, he was the son of the late William and Arvilla Jackson Smith. On June 5, 1971 he married Ruth Confer, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by two children, Stephanie Wagner, and her husband, Roger, of Bellefonte and Steven Smith of Pleasant Gap; two grandchildren, Kendra and Kyle Wagner, and his scouting family. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Smith.

Glenn graduated from State College High School in 1952 and went on to serve in the United States Navy as an Electrician's Mate from 1956 until 1960. He served on the USS Essex (CVA-9), the USS Saratoga (CV-60), and the USS Lake Champlain (CV-39). He worked as an Area Engineer for various cable companies, retiring in 1996.

Glenn was a member of the Juniata Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America. Glenn's service to Scouting included Troop Committee Chairman for Troop 66, District Commissioner, 2005 National Jamboree Staff, District and Council Camporee Staff, Summer Camp Cook, Klondike Derby Staff, and kitchen staff for various Scouting events. He was also the chairman of the annual Canadian Scout Camporee Trips – Scouter Glenn Tours. He received many awards and recognitions including the John Kriner Award, Silver Beaver, District Service Award, District Award of Merit, Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow, the James E. West Fellowship Award, and the Cross and Flame award just to name a few.

Glenn was a member of Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church. He also volunteered his time to the church and the Pleasant Gap Food Bank.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 6 from 5-7pm at the Seven Mountains Scout Camp, 227 Sand Mountain Rd, Spring Mills, PA 16875. The Monaken Lodge will honor Glenn with a Broken Arrow ceremony following the visitation at 7pm. Pastor Carrie Granché will officiate.

Burial will be private.
