Obituary of Elizabeth Sowers Majeske

Elizabeth S. Majeske, 100, of State College, Pennsylvania, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Juniper Village at Brookline.

Born October 10, 1922 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Elizabeth "Betty" was the daughter of the late J. Claire and Mabert (Musselman) Sowers. Her family moved to Baltimore while she was in 1st grade and she went through school there, graduating from Forest Park High School in June of 1940. She attended Mary Washington College (now Mary Washington University.)

Betty married William H. Majeske (high school classmate) on October 7, 1942. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1992.

She was a member of the State College Presbyterian Church. She was also a 50+ year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, having joined a Baltimore chapter originally, then transferring to the Bellefonte chapter soon after moving to State College in 1976.

Betty and William "Bill" moved many times during their marriage– living in Lewistown for 11 years. Liking the surrounding area greatly, they moved from Lewistown to State College to start a business counseling service named "General Business Services" for small businesses. Betty worked alongside Bill as office manager.

Betty's hobbies included golf with her lady's league and played Bridge multiple times a week with a card club. Betty and Bill enjoyed traveling across the country especially to Indiana to visit family.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her brother J. Clair Sowers, Jr. and his wife Lea, and a nephew Thomas E. Sowers. Betty was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Margaret Majeske.

Betty is survived by one son, William C. Majeske of Pittsboro, Indiana; two granddaughters, Elizabeth M. (Michael) Wilson of Berne, Indiana and Kim Duvall of Pittsboro, Indiana; 5 great-grandchildren, Trevor, Nathaniel, and McKenzie Wilson and Mia and AJ Duvall; 3 nephews, James C. (Nancy) Sowers of Albuquerque, NM, J. Clair Sowers III (Trish) of Norman, OK, and David E. (Laura) Sowers of Denver, Colorado.

The family will hold a private viewing and burial later this week.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
