Obituary of Harvey Kamp

Harvey Phillip Kamp of Bellefonte, PA, died on March 10, 2012 at his home with his wife Marie, his brothers, and children by his side. Harvey was born February 14, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA, to Manuel and Eleanor (nee Weiss). He and his twin brother, Byron, were welcomed by older brother, Marc. Harvey grew up in Paulsboro NJ and attained degrees from Paulsboro High School (1965), The Pennsylvania State University (1970; Bachelor's degree), and Iowa State University (1976; Master's degree). He married Glenda Jean Wilson of Erie, PA, in 1969. Their son Joel was born in 1971 and their daughter Sara arrived in 1974. On November 2, 1991, Harvey married Marie (nee Yelderman) and became a loving step-father to Marie's daughter, Debra. Harvey and Marie enjoyed traveling together throughout their 20-year marriage. Harvey especially appreciated a Mediterranean cruise they took with Marie's brother, Mark, and sister, Margie, and their spouses. He also enjoyed trips to New York City, the Pacific Northwest, and Canada. Harvey remarked, "Find the time, find a way, you can't put it off. We traveled and I'm so glad we had the chance." Harvey was an accomplished chef—always willing to don his apron for family and guests. He used recipes from Gourmet, Bon Appetit, and the Food Network to inspire new recipes of his own. For Harvey and Marie, entertaining and cooking for friends and family was an activity for them to enjoy together—it brought them great happiness and comfort. Cooking Thanksgiving dinners at the Yelderman Texas Ranch were some of their favorite times together. Harvey was the first to admit that his true love, outside of his family, was enjoying the finer things in life, including a good meal. Harvey was extremely proud to serve in the US Army until 1994, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. When asked about his service, Harvey replied, "I have absolutely no regrets. I enjoyed the assignments I received, the people I met, and the opportunity to serve my country. I will miss being a part of this community." Harvey enjoyed his work as Director of Alumni and Industry Relations at Penn State's School of Hospitality Management from 2001 to 2007. In addition to his time as an administrator, Harvey also served as President for the Penn State Hotel and Restaurant Society and was an active member of their board. Harvey was a mentor and worked diligently to bring out the best in others. It was one of his greatest joys to assist others in achieving their highest potential. In October 2011, Penn State announced the creation of the Harvey P. Kamp Student Leadership Award in recognition of his efforts. As a son, brother, husband, dad, grandpa, and friend, Harvey was known for his fun-loving disposition, fantastic wit, masterful culinary skills, and expert golf game. His presence was a blessing to everyone he met, and he will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife, Marie Kamp (Bellefonte, PA); his children, Joel Kamp (Allentown, PA), Sara Muempfer (Catonsville, MD), Debra Wallace (Rochester, NY), daughter-in-law Elizabeth Kamp, and son-in-law, Jason Wallace; his 10 grandchildren (Jordan, Jacob, Hannah, Maxwell, Zachary, Matthew, Christian, Melody, Caleb, and Daniel); his stepmother, Anna Kamp (Silver Spring, MD); his older brother, Marc Kamp (Paulsboro, NJ); his twin brother, Byron and Byron's wife, Carolyn Kamp (Livermore, CA); and stepbrother Frederick Abramson, (Gaithersburg, MD). Harvey was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Kamp; mother, Eleanor Bilick; step-father, Herman Bilick; and his step-brother Marty Abramson (Woodbury, NJ). Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the funeral home with the Rabbi David Ostrich officiating. Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on March 21, 2012 at Roosevelt Memorial Park, 2701 Old Lincoln Highway, Trevose, PA. A meal of condolence and shiva will be held at the Kamp family home in Allentown, PA following the burial service on March 21, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Harvey P.
