Obituary of Raymond E. Untrauer

Raymond E. Untrauer, 98, died on March 11, 2024, at Garvey Manor in Hollidaysburg.

He was born February 9, 1926, in Richland Township, Story County, Iowa, a son of the late Joseph F. and Julia Muller Untrauer, who were immigrants from Alsace Lorraine, France.

He was married on September 10, 1949 in Arcadia, Missouri, to E. Jeanne Sisk, who died November 5, 1984 in State College. He married Mary V. Lengyel in State College on May 20, 1989, who died December 13, 2023 in Hollidaysburg.

Six children survive him: Dr. Steven R. Untrauer of Midwest City, OK; Julianne R. Hagen of Cocoa, FL; M. Lisa Ford of Phoenixville, PA; Christopher P. Untrauer and wife Lisa of Aptos, CA; Jeanne M. McCormack and husband Brian of Laguna Niguel, CA; and Rachel L. Koll and husband Robert of Chapel Hill, NC. Sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchilden survive him. His daughter, Susan T. Fenlin, died in 2006.

He was predeceased by four brothers and one sister: Fredrick Untrauer, Roger Untrauer, Arthur Untrauer, Richard Untrauer, and Mary Miller.

In 1943, he graduated from Colo Consolidated High School, Colo, Iowa. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. degree in 1948, an M.S. degree from University of Colorado in 1951, and a Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois in 1961—all in civil engineering. He was elected to honorary memberships in Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Chi Epsilon, and Sigma Xi. He was a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, American Concrete Institute, and American Society of Engineering Education.

He was employed full-time in the departments of civil engineering at: University of Colorado, 1949-51; University of Arkansas, 1952-57; University of Illinois, 1957-1961; Iowa State University, 1961-72; and Pennsylvania State University, 1972-1989. At Penn State, he served as Head, Department of Civil Engineering from 1972-1979. At Iowa State, he was professor-in-charge of the structural engineering laboratory of the Engineering Research Institute and the structures section of the civil engineering department. His expertise was in structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete. Additional work experience was with Missouri Pacific Railroad, St. Louis MO, 1948-49; C.F. Braun and Company, Alhambra, CA, 1951-52. He retired from Penn State in 1989 as professor emeritus of civil engineering.

He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with ministries of Holy Communion minister at Our Lady of Victory and Mount Nittany Medical Center, OLV resurrection choir, Rockview prison visitor, volunteer at Saint Vincent de Paul store, and morning rosary group.

He enjoyed sports, fishing, gardening, golf, and travel. He especially enjoyed flying and in his younger days he flew as a licensed private pilot.

Family and friends will be received from 1 – 3 pm on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College, PA.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am on Monday, March 18, 2024 at Our Lady of Victory, 820 Westerly Pkwy, State College with Father George Jakopac officiating.

Burial will follow in Graysville Cemetery, Spruce Creek, PA.
