Obituary of Janet Kurtz

Janet T. Kurtz December 3, 1916 - March 31, 2012 Born in Brooklyn, NY on December 3, 1916, the daughter of the late Henry Percival (H.P.) and Janet W. Balmer Thomson, Janet died at Mount Nittany Medical Center on March 31, 2012. She completed her education at the Emma Willard School and Smith College, graduating in the class of 1938. On June 17, 1939 in West Point, NY, she married J. Scott Kurtz, who predeceased her on November 24, 1993. After the wedding, they moved to Scott's first U.S. Army assignment in the Panama Canal Zone. Throughout Scott's military career, Janet was a proud military wife who moved more than 20 times, successfully maintaining family life and a cheerful disposition. Upon their mutual retirement in 1992, they relocated to State College where Janet enjoyed 20 years of residence at Foxdale Village. She was a member of the State College Presbyterian Church. Her greatest joy came from time spent with family and friends, particularly the time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be remembered for her positive outlook and good humor, greeting every day with a smile, and for her stylish appearance. She will be missed. She is survived by her three sons Thomas S. and his wife, Grace, of State College, PA; James M. and his wife, Melanie, of Montgomery Village, MD; and David W., M.D. and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Oshkosh, WI; five grandchildren, Laura and her husband, Gregory Glasby, Sarah and her husband, David Danowitz, Scott, Matthew, and Justine; and five great grandchildren, Jacob, Adam, and Jordyn Danowitz, Trace and Zachary Glasby. She is also survived by one brother, R. Donald Thomson and his wife, Nancy, of Basking Ridge, NJ; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Foxdale Village at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2012, with the Reverend Pamela H. Ford officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Foxdale Village Community Fund, 500 E. Marylyn Avenue, State College, PA 16801 or to Centre Volunteers in Medicine, 2520 Green Tech Dr # D, State College, PA 16803. Private interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
