Obituary of Lillian Hodes

Lillian Hodes of State College, formerly of Lock Haven, died January 14, 2011 at the Fairways at age 95. She was born on August 13, 1915 in Johnstown, PA, a daughter of the late Oscar and Florence Schwartz Suchman. She was an honors graduate of Johnstown High School class of 1933, and came to live in Lock Haven upon marriage to Ellis Hodes on July 4, 1941. He preceded her in death on May 24, 1994. She was a homemaker all her married life; in her early years in Lock Haven she took an active part in the affairs of Beth Yehuda Synagogue. She served as president of the Lock Haven chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women and was also president of Beth Yehuda Sisterhood. For many years, she was a volunteer at the Lock Haven Hospital and was a life member of the hospital auxiliary. She also was a life member of Hadassah and a member of Congregation Brit Shalom in State College. She was preceded in death by a son, Melvin, and a sister, Zelma Kaufman. She is survived by a son, Ronald and his wife Carol of State College, two granddaughters, Robyn Weis and her husband, Daniel, of McDonald, and Dara Tuteur and her husband, Steven, of East Norriton, and four great grandchildren: Rachel, Zachary, and Joshua Weis, and Madeline Tuteur. She is also survived by a brother, Isadore Suchman and his wife Rosalind of Media, PA and a sister Hope Lieberman of Coconut Creek, FL. Funeral services will be held at Koch Funeral Home, State College, at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 17, 2011, with Rabbi David Ostrich officiating. Burial will be in Beth Yehuda Cemetery, Lock Haven. The family wishes that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Beth Yehuda Synagogue on West Church St. in Lock Haven or Congregation Brit Shalom in State College.
