Obituary of Eugene Flynn

Eugene Joseph Flynn, 73, of State College, died on Monday, September 3, 2012 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College. Born August 3, 1939, in Shamokin, PA, he was a son of the late Eugene P. Flynn and Margaret C. (O'Neil) Flynn of Shamokin, PA. On February 27, 1981, he married Orma Struble Flynn of State College, He was a 1957 graduate of the Shamokin Catholic High School and served in the Air National Guard from 1963-1969. Early in life, he worked as a barber in State College where he met and became proud of his association with Joe Paterno, exchanging many jokes; football was not a topic of discussion. Eugene served as the Exalted Ruler of the State College Elk's Lodge #1600 from 1975-76. Employed by The Pennsylvania State University, he was with the Commonweath Educational System/Continuing Education and later with the Office of Finance and Business as an Information Technology Consultant. He retired from Penn State on July 3, 2002, after 35 years of service. Eugene is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Swartz, and her husband, Steve, of Centre Hall, and Michelle Chitwood and her husband Matthew, and their daughter, Caycie, and son, Carter, all of Ft. Myers, FL. He is also survived by a step-daughter, Lisa S. Kerns and her husband, William, of State College and their daughters, Kristin, of College Park, MD and Laura, of State College. Also surviving are his sister, Margaret Patrilak and her husband, Michael of State College, a brother, James Flynn and his wife, Barbara of West Chester, PA, a brother-in-law, Robert Struble and his wife, Jacqueline of State College, and many nieces and nephews. Viewing will be held at the Koch Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. on Friday September 7, 2012. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012 with Msgr. Lockard officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Hall Cemetery, State College, PA following the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Koch Funeral Home, State College, PA.
