Obituary of Sidney Barnard

Sidney Earl Barnard, 79, of State College, died Saturday, January 12, 2012, at his residence. Born May 4, 1933, in Middleburg, VT, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Madeline J. Spencer Barnard. On May 26, 1957 he married June B. Lantman who survives. Also surviving are four children, Sally B. Landes and her husband, Robert, of Staunton, VA, David J. Barnard and his wife, Terri, of Chicago, IL, Marilyn B. Howell and her husband, Charlie, of Hattiesburg, MS, Gary L. Barnard, and his wife, Jean, of Millerstown; four brothers, George Spencer of Bakersville, CA, Herrick Spencer and his wife, Barbara, of Pawtucket, RI, William Spencer of Vergennes, VT, Frank Spencer and his wife, Mary Jo, of Durham, NH; five grandchildren, Ben and his wife, Ashley, Megan and Nathan Landes, Tara and Marie Barnard and several nieces and nephews. Sidney was a 1951 graduate of Vergennes High School, Vermont. He graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor's degree in Dairy Science and then in 1957 with a Master's degree also in Dairy Science from the University of Vermont. Sidney retired in 1997, after 33 years as a professor of Food Science at Penn State University and was well known for his extension work throughout Pennsylvania. Prior to that he was the Director of Quality at Cabot Cooperative Creamery, Cabot, VT. He was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church but most recently attended the Park Forest United Methodist Church and was a lay leader at Wallaceton United Methodist Church. He was an advisor to the Penn State Dairy Products Judging Team, where in 1986 they took first place in the National Competition. Sidney was an avid swimmer at the Penn State Natatorium's indoor and outdoor pools. He was a PIAA official timer for Penn State University's men's swim team. He was very interested in sports and coached many, including his children and grandchildren in soccer, basket ball and baseball. Visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton Street, State College. Funeral will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the Park Forest United Methodist Church, 1833 Park Forest Avenue, State College, with the Reverend's Lee Ellenberger, Eric Shafer, and G. Edwin Zeiders officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Park Forest United Methodist Church, 1833 Park Forest Avenue, State College, PA 16803.
