Obituary of Kim Bartoo

Kim DeForest "Bart" Bartoo, 61, of Boalsburg, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Mount Nittany Medical Center after a short battle with cancer. He was born on August 15, 1951 in Iowa City, Iowa, a son of the late James B. and Viola Mead Bartoo. He graduated from State College Area High School in 1969 and the Pennsylvania State University in 1973 with a BS in Environmental Resource Management. Bart was employed for almost 35 years by the PA Department of Transportation as an Environmental Specialist. He was the first Environmental Manager in PennDOT's District 2 and personally composed the first environmental impact statement for the district. In his earlier years he was active in Boy Scouts and high school band and wrestling, and was a camp counselor in Maine. He had a great love for the outdoors, and took pleasure in small woodworking projects. Bart enjoyed hunting and staying at his cabin in Clinton County, as well as going for long walks with his beloved dog Buddy on the grounds of the Boalsburg 28th Division Shrine. He was also a member of the Elks. A plainspoken man, he wasn't afraid to stand up for his convictions. He is survived by a brother, Scott Bartoo of State College, and three sisters: Jan Bartoo Becker and her husband Rich of State College; Jill Lillie and her husband Bob of State College; and Brenda Ruby of Boalsburg. Also surviving are a niece, Sara Becker, and four nephews: Mitch Lillie, Rob Lillie, Travis Ruby, and Fletcher Ruby. Friends will be received beginning at 10AM Friday, March 15, 2013, with a service at 10:30AM presided by Dr. Joseph E. Faulker at the Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. A light lunch will follow the service at Windmere Hall, 454 Rolling Ridge Dr., State College. Interment will be private at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Centre County PAWS, 1401 Trout Road, State College PA 16801, or to the James B. Bartoo Renaissance Scholarship at the Pennsylvania State University, 1 Old Main, University Park PA 16802. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College.
