Obituary of Edwin Dunkelburger

Edwin W. Dunkelberger, 80, of State College, died Friday, August 2, 2013. Born September 9, 1932, in Reading, he was the son of the late Alvin B. and Evelyn Weber Dunkelberger. On August 29, 1953, he married Ruth E. Deubel, who survives. He is also survived by one son, Edwin W. Dunkelberger, Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Centre Hall and one daughter, Lisa M. Campbell and her husband, Roy, of Pennsylvania Furnace; six grandchildren, Megan, Ryan and Lindsay Dunkelberger, Elizabeth, Julie and Emilie Campbell. He was a 1950 graduate of Muhlenberg High School. Edwin attended Millersville College and Penn State University. He graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1954. He received his Master's degree in Education from Penn State University in 1960. Edwin retired as the Assistant Director of the Centre County Vocational School. Prior to that he was employed as a drafting teacher at Bellefonte High School and worked for HRB-Singer. He was a member of the Pleasant Gap Lions Club, the CBICC, VICA, and PSEA. He also belonged to the Carriage Association of America and was a Curtain Village Association board member. Edwin was instrumental in the construction of the horse show complex as well as reinstating the horse shows at the Grange Fair Grounds. He oversaw the construction of the prototype Conestoga Wagon that was used to construct additional wagons for every state used in the 1976 Bicentennial Wagon Train. That wagon was later taken to Canada for the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Livestock Exposition in Toronto. He was an avid collector of antique carriages, antique tools and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities including horse shows and baseball games as well as attending Penn State Football games. Visitation will be 3 until 5 p.m., on Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, State College. Funeral service will follow at 5:15 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Reverend Mitch Smith officiating. Burial will be in Fairbrook Cemetery, Pennsylvania Furnace. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Gap Lions Club, Edwin Dunkelberger CPI Merit Award, 111 Bending Oak Drive, Bellefonte, PA 16823.
