Obituary of Carol Miller

Carol Ann Hutchinson Miller, 78, of State College, formerly of Swissvale, PA, died Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at home. Born July 7, 1935, in Bradford, PA, she was the daughter of Claude B. Hutchinson and Bernice Cassady Hutchinson. As the daughter of a Naval Officer, she was raised in Pittsburgh, Brookville, Kittanning, California, and Bradford. She graduated from Bradford High School. She attended The Pennsylvania State University and received her Bachelor's Degree in 1958. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Gamma Mu, and Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Societies. She received her Master's Degree in Library Science from The University of Pittsburgh in 1971. From 1977 to 1996, she was the Community Librarian at the Carnegie Free Library of Swissvale. On August 23, 1958, in Pittsburgh, she married Don A. Miller (PSU '57). They lived in Pittsburgh until they retired and moved to State College in 1997. She was a passionate Penn State football fan and has been a season ticket holder since 1975. She was a member of the following Penn State organizations: QuarterBack Club, Tailback Club, Men's Gymnastics Booster Club, Wrestling Booster Club, Women's Volleyball Booster Club, and Softball Booster Club. She was a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association and a member of the Nittany Lion Club. She was a board member of the Center County Alumni Association and the Men's Gymnastics Booster Club. In 2002, she and Don established the Miller-Hutchinson Men's Gymnastic Scholarship at Penn State. She was a member of Kiwanis, Elks Club, and was an advisor to the Aktion Club of State College. She enjoyed volunteering at the All Sports Museum. She was an ardent baseball fan and was a Spike's season ticket holder since their inception. She loved the theater, casinos, cats, and everything Penn State. She is survived by her husband, Don and their three children, Michael Miller and his wife, Vivian, of Opelika, AL, Janice Miller, of Westfield, NJ, and Claudia Bjorkman and her husband, Robert Everett, of Bayville, NJ. She is also survived by two grandsons, Matthew Bjorkman and Brandon Miller, and by a great-grandson, Tyler Bjorkman. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Blanche. A Celebration of Life will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be sent to the Miller-Hutchinson Scholarship Fund, payable to Penn State, 1 Old Main, University Park, PA 16802. Arrangements are under the direction of Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. WE ARE. . . . .
