Obituary of Callie Kingsbury

Callie R. Kingsbury, 88, of State College, died Sunday, November 3, 2013, at Indiana Regional Medical Center, Indiana following a short illness. Born December 6, 1924, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Ellen Reading McHaffie. On April 15, 1947 she married Howard F. Kingsbury, who preceded her in death on January 25, 2011. She is survived by five children, John H. Kingsbury and his wife, Ann, of Columbus, GA., Dallas G. Kingsbury and his wife, Gina, of Las Vegas, NV., Peter G. Kingsbury and his wife, Jenny, of Albertville, AL., David E. Kingsbury and his wife, Kathy, of Indiana and Eve M. Kingsbury and her husband, Jules Greenwald, of Maplewood, NJ.; one brother-in-law, Theron Fink of Tacoma, WA.; seven grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one nephew and four nieces. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, John McHaffie. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Education from Penn State University where she also did graduate work. Callie was hired in March of 1966 through August 1983 as an English Teacher. From August of 1983 until her retirement in 1993, she was an English Teacher and an English Department Coordinator. She was a great supporter of the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra, including serving on the board and she was a volunteer at the Central PA Dance Theater. Callie was a member of Tri Delta Sorority and kept that affiliation for many years. She had a lifelong love of travel and with her husband (and often her grandchildren), visited everywhere she dreamed. Her passions were her husband, children, grandchildren and education. She was always inquisitive and seeking new knowledge and growth. In addition to her love of music, she had a magnificent soprano voice which she shared with the Presbyterian Church choir for many years and with her children at random moments in the aisles of the grocery store. Her humor and intelligence were a perfect balance to Howard and allowed a marriage to envy and emulate by her children. She will be missed greatly by her family which included friends, former students, colleagues and "Ladies on the Hill". Visitation will be 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton Street, State College. Memorial service will follow at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery. Friends will be received at the family's home in Park Forest following the burial. Memorial contributions may be made to Pennsylvania Center Orchestra, 119 S Fraser St, State College, PA 16801. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com.
