Obituary of Robert Ewing

Robert E. Ewing, 92, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at home in the Oaks at Pleasant Gap. He was born in Montclair, New Jersey, the son of the late Edward G. and Edith P. Ewing. He was an alumnus of St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York and, following his military service, did graduate work at Columbia University. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. On January 6, 1942, he married Virginia Harwood, his loving wife of 72 years who preceded him in death six weeks earlier. A veteran of World War II, he served as a company commander in the Philippine Islands. He was the recipient of the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired in 1985 as President and CEO of the Van Nostrand Reinhold Book Publishing Company of New York. Earlier he had served as Vice President of Professional Books for the McGraw-Hill Book Company. He was an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, State College where he served on the Vestry and the Parishioners Ministry. He was a member of the Central Pennsylvania Torch Club and the Elks Lodge 1600. He is survived by his five children, Robert Jr., John, William, Andrew, and Jean. He was preceded in death by his youngest child, Edward. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and his well-loved Connor. He was a devoted husband as well as a loving father and grandfather. His advice and wisdom were always offered freely, without expectations, as a gift rather than a demand. He will be missed by all. A memorial service will take place at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 208 W. Foster Ave, State College, Pa on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com.
