Obituary of Margaret Emmers

Margaret Hussey Emmers, resident of State College for 75 years, graduate of Penn State and an artist of no small talent, died Tuesday evening at Centre Crest in Bellefonte. She was 90 years old. Born Feb. 11, 1924 in North Berwick, ME, she was the daughter of Robert A. and Maude Krumrine Hussey. In 1947 in State College, she married E. Robert Emmers, who preceded her in death in 2012. She is survived by two children, Julie Desmond of State College (Michael) and Robert Emmers of Dubois (Rosetta); two grandchildren, Alanna Desmond Novosel of Charleston, SC (Thomas), and Mackensie Desmond of Key West, FL; and a great grandson, Owen Novosel, of Charleston, SC. Mrs. Emmers graduated from State College High School in 1942 and from Penn State, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. After her graduation from Penn State, while she and her husband lived briefly in Aliquippa, she taught engineering drawing to veterans at the Penn State Technical Institute in Dravosburg. Mrs. Emmers had a life-long interest in the arts and was an accomplished painter. Over the years a number of her paintings hung in various State College restaurants and other venues. There was a showing of her art at Centre Crest while she was a resident there, and one of her paintings still hangs in the lobby. She also enjoyed sculpting and jewelry making. Despite her long years in State College, she never lost her love for Maine and many of her paintings featured scenes from the Maine coast. Mrs. Emmers was an avid bowler and along with her husband was at one time part owner of Center Lanes, a local bowling alley. She enjoyed reading, listening to classical music and arguing about politics. She helped deliver Meals-on-Wheels to the local community. Services for Mrs. Emmers will be private. Her family wanted particularly to thank all the staff at Centre Crest for the wonderful care they provided Mrs. Emmers. Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, 205 South Garner St., State College, PA 16801. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com.
